Fellow Motorist: James Ng, managing director, BYD Philippines & Singapore
Mr Ng, 52, has been overseeing the Philippines and Singapore markets for the Chinese EV giant since 2023 and 2019 respectively. We chat with the Singaporean gentleman at his office in New Tech Park.
How long have you been a motorist in Singapore?
I got my driving licence in 1994, first attempt. I took three months and two days to get my Class 3, from start to finish, because I took intensive training.
What do you like about motoring in Singapore?
The traffic jams are minimal and the roads are good. There are also expressways, such as Benjamin Sheares Bridge and East Coast Parkway, where you can drive at a good speed and enjoy the nice scenery. I can think of good ideas in that kind of environment.
What do you dislike about motoring in Singapore?
I used to have a lot of motoring dislikes in the past, before I travelled more and visited many cities with traffic jams and urban pollution.
When you schedule meetings in some other countries, you have to cater for delays due to traffic conditions, unlike in Singapore, where you can arrive for meetings on time.
Remember your first car?
Yes! My first car was a Suzuki Swift 1-litre sedan, 1995 model, manual transmission.
Tell us about your current company car.
I have a Seal, four-wheel-drive, high power. Our recent BYDs provide a good driving experience.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
I have to answer for any setback, but my management is very supportive of my localised strategies, which are customised to the Singapore style.
What is the most satisfying aspect of your role in BYD?
I’m given good flexibility to implement my BYD business plans in Singapore. I feel satisfied with our achievements and good results.
So far this year, we were overall number one car brand in Singapore (based on LTA 2024 January-March registration data for authorised motor distributors). We’re also good in the Philippines, where our network is increasing. We expect to have 25 BYD showrooms there this year, mostly in Metro Manila.
